Building optimisation: The value is clear and the time to act is now

Building optimisation is the process of improving the performance of a building’s systems (such as heating, cooling, lighting, and ventilation) in a way that reduces energy use, enhances occupant comfort and lowers operating costs.

Most optimisation measures are relatively low-cost and easy to implement, yet if they are used effectively, they can result in energy savings of up to 30%. Of course, it’s not always that straightforward, but Verco’s Bethan Phillips recommends starting now to reap the benefits of current industry trends.

In an article for Property Week, Bethan explains that ‘in today’s commercial landscape, building optimisation is no longer a nice-to-have, it’s a strategic and financial imperative.’

This is because rising energy costs, increasing expectations from stakeholders and pressure to meet sustainability targets mean there are significant rewards for businesses able to optimise their buildings soon. Building optimisation is about delivering value across the board, not just saving energy.

Why act now?

  • It’s financially smart: Optimisation delivers immediate cost savings (and most measures don’t require major capital investment), usually with minimal disruption to occupiers.

  • It boosts asset value and market appeal: Tenants, investors and buyers are increasingly seeking efficient buildings. The growing demand for disclosure of NABERS ratings reflects this shift toward performance-led decision-making.

  • You’ll avoid costly compliance risks: Regulations around energy performance and carbon emissions are tightening, so acting now helps future-proof your assets.

Where should you start?

For many of our clients, understanding building energy consumption is the first step. Then, regular analysis and interpretation of the data is needed to understand the building’s improvement potential and generate deeper insights into performance.
