Financial support for innovative decarbonisation projects in the EU: April deadline

Funding can be a huge accelerator for innovative and sustainable projects. Currently, in the EU, there are a wide variety of non-repayable public and blended funding opportunities that can align with your projects and investments (we know because, through BIP’s Global Funding Observatory, we monitor over 600 of them). Some of the valuable opportunities available are being offered by the EU Innovation Fund. They want to support decarbonisation projects ready to move into the investment and implementation phase.

What is the EU Innovation Fund offering?

The EU Innovation Fund is offering non-payable grants to projects that support and promote innovative low-carbon technologies and processes. They’re seeking to finance projects that will significantly mitigate climate change, promoting sustainable development and technological leadership in Europe.

What kind of projects are eligible?

Here is a list of projects deemed eligible to apply for the EU Innovation Fund’s grant:

  • Activities supporting innovation in low-carbon technologies and processes in the sectors listed in Annexes I and III of the EU ETS Directive 2003/87. This includes projects focusing on the use of waste heat and improvements in electrification and energy efficiency within industrial processes and energy systems.

  • Activities involving carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) in an environmentally safe way that significantly mitigates climate change.

  • The development of products that replace high-carbon-intensive ones produced in the sectors listed in Annex I of the EU ETS Directive.

  • Activities that support the construction and operation of projects focused on the capture and geological storage of CO₂ (CCS) in an environmentally safe manner.

  • Activities that support the construction and operation of innovative technologies for renewable energy and energy storage.
