Regeneration for the future of business: Why leading organisations are moving beyond sustainability

What is regenerative strategy?

Businesses have been working on their commitments to sustainability (ability to be maintained). But the leaders are adopting regeneration - going beyond minimising harm and making improvements. They are mitigating the impacts of climate change while actively creating value for communities, ecosystems and shareholders.

Creating value for communities

When decision makers reassess why and how they conduct their business and their wider role in society, business operations are focused on pillars such as community listening, regenerative leadership and metrics orientated towards the common good (e.g food, energy, education, health).

Spaces and systems are transformed based on the needs of their inhabitants, so community listening is essential (to identify needs).

There are two audiences for regenerative strategy:

  1. The customer: Needs are met through products and services.

  2. The community: Needs are integrated into the core logic of the business.

Why are leading organisations adopting a regenerative approach?

Regeneration is a strategy to operate and thrive in a rapidly changing economic, environmental and social landscape.

Building resilience in an era of change

The world is changing fast (e.g technology, climate crisis, social instability). To be able to weather the fluctuations, leading businesses are taking long-term perspectives (of 10-30 years) and integrating sustainable approaches within the business ecosystem and surrounding communities.

Responding to rising stakeholder expectations

Consumers expect businesses to act responsibly. In our highly connected societies, brand reputation can be destroyed in a moment and directly impact business success or failure.

It is not enough for businesses to simply monitor traditional KPIs to understand future business performance. Financial success needs to be achieved alongside measurable environmental and social value (alignment and balance of purpose, profit, positive impact, innovation, resilience and long-term relevance). So it’s important to measure positive systemic impact to understand the value of a business. This measurement gives a more complete perspective for designing strategies that ensure long-term success.

Enablers of regeneration

Sustainable innovation and deeptech

Sustainability is a driving force for innovation. Deeptech in particular is an exciting area in which sustainability and innovation are a powerful combination, accelerating positive impact.

Collaboration and partnerships

The success of a regenerative approach depends on collaboration and partnerships, including private sector, institutions, NGOs and government.

Business benefits of regeneration

Regenerative strategy transforms sustainability from a cost or compliance requirement into a strategic growth driver. With a regenerative strategy, you can:

  • Achieve responsible, credible and future-oriented growth where business success is directly linked to positive impact on society and the environment.
  • Reduce ESG, operational and reputational risks.
  • Strengthen stakeholder relationships (including customers as well as employees, communities and suppliers).
  • Safeguard and enhance long-term economic value with more resilient and competitive business models.
  • Strengthen your brand with a more credible, differentiated positioning.
  • Improve resilience and long-term business success.
  • Stay ahead of market and regulatory changes with products, services and strategies that are aligned with evolving market expectations.
  • Create opportunities (new markets, business models, categories, products).
