Volunteering in Brockholes

Our Chorley Office have been enjoying the sunshine and taking time out of the office to volunteer, for the second year running, in Brockholes in Preston.

Brockholes has been transformed from an old Quarry into a beautiful Nature Reserve over the past 10 years. The site relies heavily on volunteers. Only a handful of part/full time staff do everything from welcoming visitors to managing habitats for the wildlife. There is still a lot of work left to do, to get the whole site accessible to the public and share important information about the wildlife that has moved in.

The site itself is very impressive, especially considering how it started life. It is vital to provide homes for the surrounding wildlife, as well as being a fantastic opportunity to help build something that will be around for future generations to enjoy (both wildlife and humans!). On the day, we worked with the Reserve officer at Brockholes and alongside the regular volunteers, building dead hedges. The main purpose was to allow some public access to areas off the paved footpath, to get closer to nature and explore the woods, but also to restrict other areas where wildlife, such as hedgehogs, may build their homes.
