Swapping laptops for shovels: Verco volunteers with Stepney City Farm

As part of our annual volunteering programme, we spent the day at Stepney City Farm. This educational charity offers a welcoming green space for the local community. It’s also a safe, supportive environment for those facing mental health challenges. We were happy to help them with maintenance, upkeep, and company for the animals!

Our team got stuck into a range of activities, including composting, litter picking, animal pen cleaning, and some much-enjoyed animal grooming. They also tackled more physical tasks such as ripping up damaged tarmac to remove trip hazards and create safer pathways, as well as repairing fences around the site.

Verco has a long-standing relationship with the farm, having volunteered there regularly since 2018. It’s something many of the team look forward to each year.

Consultant (and volunteer) Amy Hodgson said: “We enjoy our visits to Stepney City Farm because we always come away feeling relaxed after spending the day outside. It’s a nice change from our busy desk jobs! It’s great to see all the animals the farm cares for, and to help give back to the local community by helping the farm run smoothly for the public. We hope to visit again soon!"

Senior Consultant Tom Purkhardt agreed: “Having visited a few times, I’m always keen to spend time with the donkeys and help make sure their pens are clean. This time, I was also able to clear some of the paths and lift heavy debris with the rest of the team, who came together excellently.”

Volunteering days like this are part of our commitment to supporting local communities and preserving our natural environment. They’re part of our ethos as a company and as a BCorp. You can read about a similar experience here.
